PRESS RELEASE FROM TRENTWOOD IRRIGATION: Trentwood Irrigation District in Spokane Valley is advising customers not to use their drinking water. The district shut off one of its well Tuesday morning after a malfunctioning pump started pumping sediment into the water system.

The closure affects about 1600 homes and businesses in the Trentwood area from Plante's Ferry Park east to Isenhart and from Bigelow Gulch Road south to the Spokane River. Private wells in that area are not affected, nor is Spokane Industrial Park or Kaiser Trentwood.

As a precautionary measure, the district notified the East Valley School District of the problem so they could take appropriate measure to ensure the health of the students. "We are doing all we can to determine the extent of the problem. We took the well off line and other wells are pumping clean water into the system currently.

Crews have been working since early this morning to flush the dirty water from the system," said Devon Sinsley. "Safe drinking water is critical to the health of our consumers, and responding to this situation is our highest priority."

The district is working with the Washington State Department of Health's Office of Drinking Water to resolve the issue. Routine water samples taken yesterday were satisfactory. Two more samples were taken today. The results are expected at 6 a.m. Wednesday. There have been no reports of illnesses related to drinking water.

While no mandatory health advisory was issued, the district recommends using bottled water or water from an alternate source or boiling water from the tap if it is to be used for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth.

Customers who have questions or concerns should call Trentwood Irrigation District at (509) 922-7532.

UPDATE: Students at East Valley high school East Valley middle school and Trentwood elementary have all been sent home for the day because of bad water. The Trentwood water district has confirmed that a well is providing the schools with contaminated water.

The maintenance team at East Valley high school got the call at about 645 on Tuesday morning. At that time the principal, Jeff Miller says, they put signs on all of the water fountains and closed and locked all of the locker rooms. "The kids are excited that they won't have to make up this day," said Miller. This will not count as a makeup day because the students had already started class by the time it was decided to cancel classes for the day. By 930 only a few dozen students remained waiting for rides home. UPDATE: Trentwood Irrigation says a well malfunctioned overnight. Roughly 1,600 in the area are affected. They're telling people who live in the area from Sullivan east to Plantes Ferry Park and from the river north to Bigelow Gulch NOT to drink the water. UPDATE: Authorities say the students aren't going to make up the day because school officially started. Some classes are in session. At this hour the water is being tested to figure out what the contaminants are. UPDATE: Only 3 schools in East Valley School District are closed. East Valley H.S., East Valley Middle School and Trentwood Elementary. Only those specific schools are closed because of water contamination. BREAKING: East Valley Elementary, Middle and High School as well as Trentwood Elementary are ALL closed today because of water contamination, according to East Valley school district officials.
