SLOW MOTION: Pence Hits Ball Three Times in Giants Win

Updated:

Did you see what happened in the Giants-Cardinals game last night? The broken bat play?

It's worth watching again, if for nothing more than sheer entertainment (I know, what else is sports for, right?).

Slow motion tells the whole story: Hunter Pence breaks hit bat on a swing, and as the ball leaves the bat, the broken part of the barrel hits the ball again. As the ball slides up the broken part of the bat, it gets pushed off the end of the barrel. So really, the bat hits the ball three times.

By rule, if a bat hits the ball more than once, the ball is dead and no base runners can advance. But in this case, it's a broken bat, and everything continues as if it is a normal hit.

By the time Pence hit the ball, the game had already been won by the Giants. But this play put the game even more out of reach for the Cardinals, as it became a two-run double.
