Initiative 502

Posted: Updated:

Washington - Initiative 502 means legalizing marijuana and a tax revenue for the state but could also mean more crime.

If passed, the initiative would change our state law for marijuana and allow the state liquor control board to regulate and tax marijuana for people over the age of 21.

I-502 would allow people to buy an ounce of marijuana from a licensed retailer in our state and allow the state to add a 25% tax on the sale of marijuana.

The initiative says money generated from the tax would go toward funding this measure and educating the public about health and safety risks posed by marijuana use.

However, this measure does not legalize the general use of marijuana.  Even though the state may change it's law, it is still illegal under federal law.

This measure does change the law for driving under the influence.

If the initiative passes, there will be zero tolerance for anyone under the age of 21 who is caught driving with marijuana in their system.
