John rescued Shep as an 8-month-old puppy from a shelter and they have been inseparable ever since. Shep is now 19-years-old and suffers from arthritis. His arthritic bones make it hard for him to walk and even to sleep. John has found that the one place Shep can sleep peacefully, is in the water. John is seen here cradling his best friend and his dog, Shep, in Lake Superior as his dog peacefully sleeps on his shoulder.

John knows that Shep is nearing the end of his life and cannot what life will be like, when his best friend is gone.
