A handful of local high school athletes are state finalists for the national Wendy's High School Heisman award.

The High School Hesiman is given to top scholar-athletes who demonstrate the "spirit of hard work and dedication through their outstanding achievements in athletics, academics and community/school leadership", according to the news release sent out Tuesday.

Out of 20 finalists from the state of Washington, the local nominees include:

Gunnar Kayser (Mead-Spokane)

Tyler Mundt (Rosalia-Rosalia)

Kelsey Frank (Mt. Spokane-Spokane)

Lizzy Estes (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls)

Brittany Hernandez (Saint Michaels-Spokane)

Washington saw a total of 617 applicants for the award. There are a total of 45,000 seniors who applied nationwide. One girl and one boy from each state will be named state winners on Nov. 5. Of those state winners, 12 will be chosen as national finalists, with the winner announced Dec. 7 in New York City. National winners get a crystal Wendy's High School Heisman Trophy, a $500 gift certificate from Wendy's, and Wendy's will donate $10,000 to each winner's respective high school.
