Local Universities Take A Position Pertaining To Initiative 502

KHQ.COM - Numerous universities are responding to Initiative 502 after it was passed by Washington voters on Tuesday night.

Here's what WSU sent us:

  •  Marijuana remains illegal under federal law.  The Drug Free Schools and Communities Act also mandates that any university receiving federal funds must adopt and implement a program to prevent the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees.
  • Possession and use of marijuana will not be permitted on the WSU campus despite the new state law. 
  • Student and employee violators may be subject to discipline under applicable policies.  Others may be subject to removal and trespass from WSU property.
  • WSU will thoroughly review the new law before adopting any new policies or making any changes in existing policies to ensure full compliance with state and federal laws.

Here's what Jeffery Hart, Assistant Dean, Student Life at Gonzaga sent us:

Gonzaga University's drug policy is well-established and based on guidance from the U.S. Department of Education and federal law.  We also align with state laws in terms of prohibited conduct.  As with alcohol, the University has the discretion to regulate or prohibit legal consumption of marijuana. We do not anticipate any changes in our current policy regarding marijuana even if Measure 502 is approved.  The state has a great deal of regulatory work to do and more than a year to do it.  We will monitor this issue closely for its impact on the University.

Alcohol and Drugs

"In compliance with state law, the University permits students who are of legal age to have alcoholic beverages in the privacy of their own room under certain guidelines."
