SPOKANE, Wash. -

March Madness is making a return to Spokane in 2014.

Washington State made the announcement Monday night that they will be a host school for the 2014 men's basketball tournament. The Cougars will host the second and third rounds at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena March 20 through March 22 in 2014.

"The bid process was as competitive as ever, with 53 cities expressing the desire to be a part of one of the world's premier sporting events," NCAA Vice President of Men's Basketball Dan Gavitt said in a news release. "We are thrilled for our hosts for the '14 tournaments, as they include a mix of cities that have proven over the course of several decades how to stage this great event, as well as cities that have come on to the scene in recent years and have embraced the tournament."

The teams that win the second round games in Spokane will advance to the Sweet 16 rounds in other cities.

Also announced on Monday was the news that the NCAA Tournament will return to Madison Square Garden after a 53-year hiatus. The arena hosted 71 tournament games between 1943 and 1961. Most recently is has been the site of the NIT and Big East Tournaments. The Garden will be a first round host for the tournament in 2014 and 2015.
