Red Light Cameras Bring In More Than $1 Million

SPOKANE, Wash. - Red light cameras are showing up at intersections across Spokane, and they're bringing in a lot of money for the city. In fact, red light cameras have already brought in more than a million dollars this calendar year.

Those numbers are only through the end of October, but the cameras took in $1.27 million dollars as of October 30th. The city did have to pay a few people for the upkeep and at the end of the day, this year alone, the city's collected more than $706,000.

Last year in 2011 they collected $352,000 and they used most of that money for 8 traffic calming projects in Spokane.

It's important to point out that all of the money collected from this project cannot go toward things like keeping city employees on staff. The money can only be invested in traffic calming projects.

So they have $706,000 that has not yet been spent and city officials told KHQ Local News Reporter Alex Rozier that they will use that money for traffic projects in 2013.
