UPDATE FROM PULLMAN, Wash. - (AP) - Andrew Furney kicked a 27-yard field goal on Washington State's first possession of overtime, and the Cougars overcame an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to stun rival Washington 31-28 in the Apple Cup on Friday, snapping an eight-game losing streak.

Washington quarterback Keith Price threw an interception on the first play of overtime that defensive lineman Kalafitoni Pole nearly returned for a game-ending touchdown, but he was caught at the 5.

The Cougars (3-9, 1-8 Pac-12) took possession and, after picking up a first down, Furney kicked a 27-yard field goal, leading to a crush of crimson and gray fans storming and celebrating at midfield.

Washington (7-5, 5-4) had a chance to win on the final play of regulation, but Travis Coons' 35-yard field goal attempt at the same end of the stadium was wide right after a bad snap.

UPDATE: At halftime the Cougs lead the Huskies 10 to 7 in the 105th Apple Cup. In the second quarter UW took the lead 7-3 when Keith Price connected Austin Seferian-Jenkins for 11 yards for a touchdown.

The Cougs responded with a Carl Winston one yard touchdown run to regain the lead.

PREVIOUS STORY:

KHQ'S KATIE STEINER: Today is the big day...it's Apple Cup 2012! The game starts at 12:30, but many fans have spent the holidays down in Pullman.

We spent the morning with the Guild family...diehard Cougs. Bob and Suzy graduated from WSU, their two kids graduated/are going to school at WSU, along with their niece and nephew.

We will be live all morning bringing you updates on KHQ in between the Today Show and also on KHQ.com. Look for a Facebook report from me as well!

If you can't make the game in person you can watch it LIVE on FOX.

KHQ'S COLIN McQUILKIN: As someone with no dog in the fight for today's Apple Cup, I thought I would get on here and look at the rivalry from a historical perspective. The first meeting between the two teams was in 1900 and ended in a 5-5 tie. That's a pretty good way to start a rivalry if you ask me. Up until 1950, the teams competed for the Governor's Trophy until it was renamed the "Apple Cup" after Washington's famous apple crop.

In the 104 meetings of the two teams, Washington leads the series 67-31, and there have been six ties. In the more recent history of the series, however, it has been a little more even, with the Huskies holding only a two game advantage over the last ten games, including winning the last three matchups.

The Huskies come into today with a 7-4 record and ranked #25 in the latest BCS rankings.  The Cougars, in their first year under head coach Mike Leach, enter the tilt with a record of 2-9. On paper, this game is a blowout, Huskies winning handily. However, football games aren't won on paper, and emotions run high in rivalry games. My prediction for today's game…Huskies pull away late and win 36-24.
