2 Multi-Millionaires In Powerball Jackpot; One Ticket Sold In Idaho Worth $1 Million

UPDATE: Powerball officials confirm that one million dollar ticket was sold in Idaho. That's all the information they're releasing at this hour. As soon as we get more details we'll post them.

CHICAGO (AP) - Two ticket holders will share the highest Powerball jackpot ever, and the second-largest top prize in U.S. lottery history. The question is: Who are the winners waking up to new lives as multimillionaires?

Lottery officials said early Thursday that tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri matched all six numbers to win the record $587.5 million jackpot.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night are: 5, 16, 22, 23, 29. The Powerball is 6.

It was not clear whether the winning tickets belonged to individuals or groups. Arizona lottery officials said early Thursday morning they had no information on that state's winner or winners but would announce where it was sold during a news conference later in the day. Lottery officials in Missouri did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Powerball officials say the record jackpot has been won.

Early Thursday morning officials confirmed that two winning tickets were sold: One in Arizona and one in Missouri. An additional 8,924,123 players won smaller prizes.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night are: 5, 16, 22, 23, 29 and Powerball of 6.

A lottery official said late Wednesday that the jackpot increased to $579.9 million by the time of the drawing, making the cash option $379.8 million.

The drawing Wednesday night for the Multi-State Lottery Association's prize followed 16 consecutive drawings that produced no top winner, boosting the Powerball to the second-largest potential lottery payout in U.S. history.

Tickets earlier Wednesday were selling at a rate of 130,000 a minute nationwide, the jackpot enticing many people who rarely, if ever, play the lottery.

UPDATE: The winning numbers in Wednesday's jackpot drawing are 5 - 16 - 22 - 23 - 29, Powerball: 6. The estimated jackpot jumped to more than $579 million dollars.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The record Powerball jackpot just keeps rising. It now stands at $550 million after officials say brisk sales keep driving up the payout amount.

The jackpot was boosted to $500 million on Tuesday and raised again Wednesday morning to $550 million.

A winner taking the cash option would get $360.2 million before taxes.

The numbers are an estimate and could be increased again as the drawing nears.

Powerball officials say they now believe there is a 75 percent chance that the winning combination of numbers will be drawn Wednesday night.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Visions of lifelong riches are surely dancing in the heads of those rushing to buy lottery tickets for tonight's $500 million Powerball jackpot.

Past winners of mega-lottery drawings and financial planners have some more sound advice: stick to a budget, invest wisely, learn to say no and be prepared to lose friends while riding an emotional roller-coaster.

Tales of big lottery winners who wind up in financial ruin or other desperate straits are increasingly common.

A two-time New Jersey lottery winner squandered her $5.4 million fortune. And a West Virginia man who won $315 million a decade ago on Christmas later said the windfall was to blame for his granddaughter's fatal drug overdose and his divorce.
