Denver to Leave WAC After Just One Year

Updated:

After just one year in the Western Athletic Conference, the University of Denver has decided to cut ties with the likes of Idaho, Cal State-Bakersfield, New Mexico State and Seattle.

Denver is leaving for the Summit League. So, the WAC invited Grand Canyon University to join the fold in time for the 2013-14 season. The invitation is dependent on the school completing its reclassification process from Division II to Division I. Even if the process goes as planned, NCAA rules prohibit the team from playing in the postseason next year.

Grand Canyon University is located in Phoenix and has an enrollment of 6,500.

The WAC will drop football next season but will still house athletics programs for Cal State-Bakersfield, Idaho, New Mexico State, Seattle and Utah Valley.

Idaho has said it will take all of its sports except for football back to the Big Sky Conference beginning in 2014-15.
