Academic All-Star: Jalen DeVine of Hanford High School

RICHLAND, Wash. -- Hanford High School senior Jalen DeVine tore up the Mid-Columbia Conference this football season. He finished third in the league in rushing and ranks tied for first in his senior class.

"My sister, she got really good grades, so I try to follow her academic way. My dad is in the hall of fame here at Hanford. So I try to be like him, and excel in sports that way," DeVine said.

"Everything that I've ever seen from him is that he always gives his best. I've watched many practices that he's been in, also games. Coaches never have to push him. He pushes himself," Hanford athletic director Tom Hegarty added.

Along with being a three-sport athlete, DeVine participates in Key club, National Honor Society and Link crew.

"Like he is on the field or in practices in the gym or when he's playing football or baseball, he always gives his best. That attitude has carried over into the classroom for Jalen," Hegarty said.

A few colleges are trying to recruit Jalen for football. Some of his top choices are Claremont, Pacific and Simon Fraser. He is still focused on what he wants to study.

"Probably engineering because I like math, and physical therapy because I like sports. It'd be fun being around that, so I'd like my job," DeVine said.
