Citigroup To Eliminate More Than 11,000 Jobs

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Citigroup says it will eliminate more than 11,000 jobs as it looks to cut expenses and improve efficiency.

The bank has not spelled out how many of the jobs will be in the United States, but says roughly 6,200 will come from Citi's consumer banking unit -- which includes everyday functions like branches and checking accounts. About 1,900 jobs also will come from the institutional clients group, which includes investment banking.

The company says the cuts will result in about $1 billion in charges in the fourth quarter and about $100 million in charges during the first half of next year.

It expects about $900 million in expense savings next year and annual expense savings of more than $1.1 billion starting in 2014.
