Small Idaho Schools Have Option to Play 6-Man Football

Updated:

TWIN FALLS, Idaho - Small Idaho high schools will have the option to play 6-man football next fall.

The Times-News reports the Idaho High School Activities Association voted Tuesday to support a pilot project for three years, starting next fall.

Participating schools will have to create their own schedules and will have to organize their own playoffs initially.

IHSAA board member Tim Perrigot says a number of small schools in Idaho are seeing their enrollment decrease. He says about eight schools appear to be potential candidates for 6-man football, but others such as charter and alternative schools may also look at adding the sport.

Camas County athletic director Randy Jewett said Tuesday's decision was a victory for "tiny" school football across the state.

Montana has sponsored 6-man football for three decades and has 34 6-man teams.
