Marijuana Now Legal, But Not Much Will Change

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Only an ounce of marijuana is legal in the state of Washington.  Even with this new change though,  not much will change for the jails or court system with the new marijuana law.

Spokane doesn't not deal with many misdemeanor marijuana cases, instead focuses on the bigger problems here such as meth and heroine.

Across the state in King and Pierce County, prosecutors dismissed more than 220 misdemeanor marijuana cases.  In Spokane, no cases have been dropped.

Spokane County prosecuting attorney Steve Tucker is in Seattle with other prosecuting attorneys from Washington.  They are meeting to decide how marijuana cases will be handled in the future and what changes will need to be made.

Since marijuana possession is still illegal under federal law, they will also be looking at what that means for our state.  We will know more when Tucker returns on Monday.

For felony cases, nothing will change.  Forty grams was the previous felony level and 40 grams remains the current felony level.
