Homeless Under The Highway, Spokane City Leaders Try To Fix The Feces Problem

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - The homeless crowd continues to grow under the highway and because of that, there is a growing problem with the homeless defecating by nearby businesses.

Because of that, the city of Spokane will soon place six portable bathrooms near the places where these people sleep. According to city code it is not allowed for homeless to camp under the freeway, but everyone around there says that police will kick them out and they will come back twenty minutes later.

"This is our home, this is where we live," John Frank said. "The people around here are generally fantastic."

Many of the people we talked to say they go to Dick's Hamburgers as well as the nearby Greyhound bus station to use the bathroom, but sometimes that is not an option and that is when they decide to go on the street.

"It's gross. I've wanted to get that thing cleaned for a long time," Frank said. "I try telling them these are our next door neighbors and all of our trash is spilling of on their property."

Frank hopes that if people want to raise awareness about the problem that they do so in a compassionate manner because he feels that homeless are not welcome in Spokane.

"The entire city is no trespassing for homeless, really," Frank said.
