SPOKANE, Wash. - ‘Tis the season to raise money for local charities and Spokane City employees were up to the challenge when Mayor David Condon asked them to participate in this year's "Penny Wars" competition to raise money for children with developmental disabilities and delays at the Spokane Guilds' School & Neuromuscular Center (SGS&NMC).
The competition originally started as part of the city's annual United Way kick-off campaign for each floor at City Hall, but quickly expanded to 12 off-site city departments, including: the Spokane Public Library, Street Maintenance Department and Water Department.
Kara Heatherly, assistant to Mayor Condon, stated in a phone conversation, that they were planning on having the seven floors at City Hall participate, but she kept on receiving calls from other departments saying that they too wanted their five-gallon container to participate in the "Penny Wars" competition for the kids.
Employees fought for the title of top "lifesaver" for whomever filled their container with the most pennies. Each team received a point per penny and lost points on all other donations, e.g.: 1 quarter = 25 negative points. Participants could "sabotage" other competitors by placing nickels, dimes, quarters, cash and checks into other departments' containers.
The competition ended before Thanksgiving and the winning jug (pictured) came from the 4th floor. Employees collected a total amount of $2,253.00 to help provide physical, occupational, and speech therapies for infants and toddlers, ages birth to three, attending the Spokane Guilds' School. Mayor Condon will present the check to SGS&NMC Executive Director, Dick Boysen, on Tuesday, December 18th at 1:00 p.m. on City Hall's 7th floor.
