Parents, Students On Edge As Classes Resume In Newtown

Posted: Updated:

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) - Some parents may still keep their kids at home -- but schools in Newtown, Conn., are opening their doors today for the first time since Friday's deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

The school where 20 children died will remain closed. It's been designated a crime scene, and state police say it could be months before police turn the school back over to the district. In the meantime, school officials are making plans to send students to a former middle school in a neighboring town.

The mother of one 15-year-old who's supposed to be back in his high school classes today says if her son wants to stay home, she'll let him stay home -- but she thinks "going back to a routine is a good idea." At least, she says, that's what she hears from professionals.

A man whose 10-year-old daughter attends a local Catholic school says it's time for her to get back to classes -- though he admits that he's worried.

Local police and school officials have been discussing how and when to increase security. State police say they will be on alert for threats and hoaxes.
