NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) - Bells are ringing in a Connecticut town to commemorate the moment one week ago when a gunman began a shooting rampage at an elementary school that killed 20 children and six adults.

Gov. Dannel (DAHN'-uhl) Malloy and other officials are leading a moment of silence after the ringing of the bells Friday at Trinity Episcopal Church.

The bell is ringing 26 times in memory of each life lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The gunman also killed his mother before the massacre, and himself afterward.

No formal remarks were planned Friday morning. Other places throughout the country were planning similar observances.

Citizens of Spokane are invited to gather on the steps of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes where the funeral toll will ring and a brief prayer will be offered by Bishop Blase Cupich.

The act of remembrance is on Friday, December 21st at 9:30 a.m. The Cathedral is located at 1115 W. Riverside Ave.

MORE DETAILS:

The nation will pay tribute this morning to the victims of last Friday's mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

Houses of worship around the country will ring their bells 26 times at 9:30 a.m. - exactly seven days since the shooting occurred - in memory of the 26 people killed at the school.

In Newtown, a bridge is adorned with two gold balloons, one is shaped like the number 2, the other shaped like a 6. Handwritten tributes mention 26 snowflakes. Another reads "26 angels will guide us."
