Looff Carrousel Closed For Annual Maintenance

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Riverfront Park's 1909 Looff Carrousel is now closed for scheduled annual restoration.  With more than 250,000 riders a year the Carrousel is one of the most popular and iconic attractions in Spokane.  Annual scheduled maintenance will involve basic gear, horse and building maintenance.

Spokane's Carrousel is one of only 45 operating antique carousels in the nation. The Carrousel proudly celebrated its 100th birthday in 2009 and still remains a favorite of young and old alike.  Even rarer is the fact that this Carrousel began operation in Natatorium Park in Spokane and continues to be enjoyed in the same community.  Many carrousels have met tragic ends in either fires or floods or economic down turns and have been dismantled.

"It's Spokane's passion and affection for this Carrousel that has allowed it to both remain in Spokane and continue to operate to the delight of residents and visitors alike," said Debby Dodson, Riverfront Park Assistant Manager.  "Without this dedication and care, this treasure could have easily gone the direction of many others," she added.

The 54 horses, 2 chariot benches, giraffe and tiger are scheduled to re-emerge February 28th for another season of operation and for the delight of riders of all ages.

About Riverfront Park and the Carrousel

Spokane's fabulous hand-carved Looff Carrousel is a focal point in our 100-acre urban park, located on the site of the Expo '74 World's Fair.  Here you'll find lots of seasonal activities including skating fun at The Ice Palace, open now with a full schedule and offering lessons for all ages beginning January 12.
