Woman At Home During Break In Recalls Scary Story With Her Six Month Old Baby Inside

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE COUNTY, WASH. - Residents in the "Northwood" neighborhood are hoping their string of break-ins comes to an end very soon. In the past month and a half there have been more than a handful of homes who have had their places broken into, but to this day no one has been arrested for any of these crimes.

Monday in the middle of the afternoon Taryn Pemberton was at home with her six month old baby when a man busted down her door. Pemberton's baby was sleeping at the time so she grabbed her and headed right to her bathroom to lock herself in.

"He had to have a crow bar because there was a lot of damage to my door," Pemberton said. "We put a whole new door in. The whole door knob was completely dented in, the lock was completely out."

Thankfully the man did not take anything from inside, but she said she had to take her gun with her because she did not know his intentions.

"I stayed pretty calm all things considered," Pemberton said. "I mean having the means to defend myself if he came upstairs really helped a lot because then I knew I had something."

The Spokane County Sheriff's Office says at this point they believe these separate incidents are isolated. They say they plan to keep a closer eye on the neighborhood in the coming weeks.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SPOKANE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE: On Monday, January 21, 2013, at about 2:30 p.m., Spokane County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the 8400 block of East Sunflower Lane to an occupied, residential burglary call.

The female homeowner told 911 she heard someone break into her house and that she had armed herself with a handgun and locked herself in a bathroom. The victim was able to get a look at the suspect who she described as a white male between 6' and 6'2" and very skinny. She said the suspect was wearing a black hoodie style sweatshirt and baggy blue jeans.

When deputies arrived on scene they saw the front door to the residence had been pried open. Deputies were able to track the suspect a short distance from the residence where it appeared the suspect drove off in a vehicle. A neighbor said he saw a black Dodge Ram prowling around the area a couple weeks prior but there was no vehicle description with this incident.

At about 7:00 p.m. that same evening, deputies responded to a second occupied residential burglary call approximately two blocks from the Sunflower Lane burglary near the 6300 block of North Jenson Road. In this incident the homeowner could hear someone breaking her door open then heard someone inside her home.

The victim told 911 she was in an upstairs bedroom. Deputies responded quickly and located the female homeowner safe inside her house. Deputies determined the suspect used some type of tool to pry open the front door. The victim told deputies she could hear the suspect on the main floor of her residence.

She the upstairs floor creeks when she walks and thought the suspect must have heard her walking and fled the scene. No items were taken in either incident. Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for any information leading to an arrest in these two incidents.

Persons with information should call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 1-800-222-TIPS, or should forward the tip via the Internet website www.crimestoppersinlandnorthwest.org. Tipsters do not have to give their name to collect the cash reward.
