SPOKANE, Wash. -

His game is not always flashy, but David Stockton has proven to be a crucial piece of the puzzle for the Zags from the day he set foot on campus.

Stockton, now a junior at Gonzaga, recently sat down with play-by-play man Greg Heister and said something you don't always hear from a D-I athlete: he had doubts about his place at GU.

"First of all, I thought there was no way I could play here," said Stockton. "I watched Jeremy Pargo. That team was so dominantly athletic and large. I said there was no way. But I got here and started playing and said ‘maybe, why not give it a shot, I'm here anyway, I might as well see if I can get on the floor'. Things worked out for me and I'm doing things I never thought I would be."

Some other highlights from the interview:

Q: Did you know [Gonzaga] was going to be this kind of team when the season started?

A: "Yeah, I thought we would be really good. We can compete, we're really good at every position. We have a better mindset than we've had…"

Q: What about Kelly Olynyk? This is as good a transformation in a player than I've ever seen.

A: "He's… I think that [redshirt] year the game really slowed down for him. What I mean by that is he's not running over people like he used to… he's under control, he's got a certain patience that a junior should have, and he's gotten stronger and more athletic."

Q: What do you do besides play basketball?

A: I usually hang out with the family. Everyone comes out from the summer… My oldest brother Houston is in Missoula right down living and bartending. My other brother Michael is playing overseas in Germany…. My sister is now at Montana State playing basketball and my sister Laura is a sophomore at Gonzaga Prep. And my little brother – he's a sixth grader just doing his thing."
