Man Behind Bars in Yakima County For Assault & Stealing a Car

TOPPENISH, Wash. -- A man is behind bars in the Yakima County Jail tonight, accused of assaulting another man and stealing his car.

On Tuesday morning, Yakima Sheriff's Office units were sent to the 400 block of McDonald Road for a two car accident.

When deputies arrived, they found one man holding a second male down.  Both were bloody, and it was obvious they had been fighting. Deputies soon discovered that the subject that was being held down, 25-year-old Clifton Hines, had stolen the other subject's Dodge Durango from the 1100 block of Washington Ave in Toppenish.

The victim had started his Durango outside of his house to warm up, but a short time later, he saw it being driven off. That's when the victim says got into his Dodge Stratus and chased the stolen vehicle.

When chase reached the 400 block of McDonald Road the victim passed the stolen Durango and stopped in the roadway to attempt to stop the suspect, Clifton Hines.

Hines the rammed Durango into the Stratus two times, then Hines went off the road in the Durango and into a yard.

Hines attempted to flee on foot, but was caught a short distance later by the victim.  After being captured, he struck the victim one time on the eye with a large rock. There were no obvious signs of injury to the victim.

Hines was booked into the Yakima County Jail for Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Assault 1st Degree, and Driving with a Suspended Driver's License. He also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
