SPOKANE, Wash. - Just one day after U.S. Marshals arrested Michael Wheeler, KHQ got an exclusive look at the path he took to escape from Geiger Corrections Center. Wheeler arrived at Geiger in November of last year and prior to that he was in the Spokane County Jail. While in the Spokane County Jail, Wheeler lived in the same housing unit and worked in the same kitchen as Nathan Calvert. Calvert escaped from Geiger less than a year ago.
It just so happens that Wheeler's escape route was very similar to the one Calvert took. Wheeler was working in the kitchen at Geiger as well.
"From what I understand he got quite a few cuts and things of that nature," Sergeant Dan Flint said. "They followed the blood trail for quite a bit, but it appears that somebody picked him up is more than likely what happened."
In order to pull it off Wheeler had to get past three fences. The first one was added after Calvert's escape. The second had army wire on top and the third had what the Sergeant described a "potentially deadly" razor wire throughout.
Due to this additional escape officials at Geiger already were adding extra security cameras as of Thursday. They also plan to put in more heavy duty doors and motion detector alarms on the outside.
Currently there are 247 inmates at Geiger, but at any given time there are only seven deputies on patrol. That means there are roughly 35 inmates for every one deputy. When asked if Geiger will be around long into the future, one official said, "absolutely."
