Travis' Game-Winner Lifts Whitworth

Posted:

Emily Travis drove the length of the court and banked home a game-winning basket with less than two seconds remaining to lift Whitworth past Lewis & Clark 53-52 Friday at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Lewis & Clark took a one point lead with 10.4 seconds remaining after Katie Anderson was fouled on a three-point shot. Anderson made all three free throws.

But after a time out, Travis took the inbounds pass and raced down the court, stepping between two Pioneers defenders before firing up the shot. After the officials met to adjust the time remaining on the clock, Lewis & Clark got the ball inbounds before calling a time out at half court. But with 1.4 seconds remaining, the Pioneers turned it over on the inbounds attempt, allowing Whitworth to walk away with the victory.

The Pirates improve to 15-5 overall, and 8-3 in Northwest Conference play, while the Pioneers drop to 18-2 overall, and 9-2 in conference play.

Travis led all scorers with 19 points, while KC McConnell pulled down 14 rebounds for Pirates.

Whitworth returns to action at 6:00pm Saturday against Pacific (Ore.) at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
