UW Alum Appointed to Secretary of the Interior

Posted: Updated:

NBCRightNow.com - President Barack Obama nominates REI business executive Sally Jewell to lead his Interior Department.

Jewell is the president and chief executive officer at Recreational Equipment, Inc. The company sells outdoor clothing and gear. She is the first woman the president has picked for his Cabinet during his second term.

Obama noted her previous experience as an engineer in oil fields and her record of achievement and environmental stewardship at REI. He also said she is an active outdoorswoman who spent a month climbing mountains in Antarctica.

If confirmed, Jewell would replace current Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who held the position during Mr. Obama's first term. Salazar announced in January that he would step down in March.

Jewell moved to Seattle as a young girl and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in mechanical engineering.
