OLYMPIA, Wash. - Supporters of gun rights in the state are showing their force in Olympia.
Hundreds of proponents rallied in Olympia on Friday, carrying guns and signs against restricting weapon sales. State lawmakers have proposed a variety of ways to fight gun violence this year, including an expansion of background checks and allowing teachers to carry firearms.
Gun advocates say restrictions on gun sales and magazine capacities would infringe on second amendment rights. Some advocates suggest that it would be better to eliminate gun-free zones or strengthen punishments for those who commit crimes with guns.
Those who support new gun restrictions are optimistic that some legislation could pass this year as lawmakers respond to the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut.
