SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Firefighters were called to a house fire Sunday morning in west Spokane.

The call came in shortly before 9:00am after callers reported seeing smoke coming from the basement of a home in the 1900 block of West Augusta. Firefighters arrived on scene and made entry into the home in an effort to extinguish the flames in the basement before they spread. However, once inside the fire grew quickly and jumped from the basement to the first floor. Firefighters exited the house and began another offensive attack from the outside. Once outside, firefighters quickly put out the blaze.

Authorities say the two occupants where able to escape unharmed, however a couple of dogs were in the basement and died in the fire. No other injuries were reported.

Fire investigators are on scene trying to determine a cause.

As soon as we get any additional information, we will be sure to update this story.
