Council Votes In Favor Of New Marijuana Ordinance

SPOKANE, Wash. - Marijuana legalization has been a topic across the country and especially here in Washington State with the passing of Initiative 502. Monday night the city of Spokane officially weighed in.

Council members voted unanimously in favor of a new ordinance that brings Spokane's laws in line with the state law after the passage of Initiative 502 last November.

The local ordinance has two main parts: The first defines what forms of marijuana use are legal in the city limits. The second makes it illegal to open any packages containing pot or marijuana products if you're in public, similar to the open container law that makes it illegal to open a can of beer out in the open.

If you violate that law, you would be cited for open possession and consumption of marijuana, a Class 3 civil infraction.

Council members say they still have a lot of work to do in the next 9 months before statewide legalization is complete.

Now the council must decide how the city is going to deal with recreational use marijuana as it continues to be implemented statewide. To help clear that up,  the Washington State Liquor Control Board will meet with the council Tuesday afternoon before a scheduled public hearing at the Convention Center.
