Mariners, King Felix Make A Deal

Updated:

The deal between the Seattle Mariners and pitcher Felix Hernandez is a done deal and will be formally announced at a news conference on Wednesday, the Seattle Times reported.

The news conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. (PT).

"I think it's a great thing for the Seattle Mariners, it's a great thing for Felix Hernandez and we're looking forward to this guy being here for a long time, obviously," Zduriencik told the newspaper.

News of the pending 7-year, $175 million deal broke last week, but reports about the condition of Hernandez's throwing elbow appeared to put the neogitations on ice.

PEORIA, Ariz. - Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said Tuesday that discussions on star pitcher Felix Hernandez's contract continue between the club and Hernandez's agents but the GM provided no update on finalization of the deal.

Hernandez, a three-time All-Star and the 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner, is due to report to Mariners spring training headquarters Tuesday for his physical.

The two sides have been working on a seven-year, $175 million deal but the deal has yet to be announced. There has been speculation and reports about an injury to Hernandez's pitching elbow that could be slowing the negotiations.

Zduriencik said the Mariners and Hernandez's agents, Wil Polidor and Scott Pucino, have engaged "significantly" in talks.
