NRA Increases Pressure on Washington Lawmakers

OLYMPIA, Wash. - The National Rifle Association is increasing pressure on lawmakers in Washington state who have endorsed a plan to expand gun background checks.

The NRA asked members of the organization to contact lawmakers to express opposition to the bill. The group also sent out a mailing for members to call Republican Rep. Mike Hope, a police officer previously supported by the NRA.
   
Hope said on Tuesday that he supports the background check plan, saying it is a responsible way to help keep guns away from violent criminals and the mentally ill. Hope says he has received around 300 emails about the gun bill and believes there are a lot of misconceptions about what it does.

Gun buyers already have to get a background check if they purchase from a federally licensed firearm dealer. The bill would expand that to sales between private parties.
