Compton, CA (PRWEB) February 13, 2013
An enthralled audience of off-road enthusiasts gathered in the Johnson Valley, California High Desert for the King of the Hammers event held February 3-8. The 2013 races boasted bigger crowds and more vendors at “Hammertown” and 4 Wheel Parts was proud to connect with the 4x4 community, sponsor events and take part in the action.
On Thursday February 7, the Smittybilt Every Man Challenge featured vehicles required to have either stock, over the counter, or aftermarket parts. Two Rubicon Express XJs were among the Rubicon Express Modified field and John Currie took first place while Matthew Peterson finished first in the Pro Comp Stock. Although Team 4 Wheel Parts participated, none of its vehicles were able to finish the Every Man Challenge. The attrition rate this year was off the charts.
4 Wheel Parts hosted the time trials for the main event on Friday, February 8 – the seventh running of the King of the Hammers. The 165-mile course featured waterfalls, desert sections, and rock trail sections. Big name desert racers Bobby Gordon and TJ Flores were on hand, but top honors went to Randy Slawson who finished first with a course time of 7 hours 28 minutes and 10 seconds. Team 4 Wheel Parts was represented by four racers, but only Jason Scherer of Rubicon Express finished with a course time around 13 ½ hours.
The six day event had plenty of crowd attractions with food carts, the Red Bull team and a host of family-friendly activities. Means Dry Lake bed sported chilly weather good for vehicle horsepower. After lunch when the desert wind picked up,truck accessories like tonneau covers and trail goggles came in handy. The King of the Hammers $20 entry fee goes to SavetheHammers.org to halt the 29 Palms base expansion. The effort’s goal is to raise $200,000 and currently the organization has raised just over half that amount.
