UPDATE: SPD Shuts Down Knitting Factory Citing Public Safety Concerns

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. – Bands and ticket holders alike continue to wait to find out whether or not more shows will be canceled after the Knitting Factory's temporary closure.

Jimmy Arguello, the lead singer of a band called The Fail Safe Project, says they are still waiting to find out if their upcoming show at the Knitting Factory will be canceled.

"No official word yet," Arguello said. "I still haven't heard back, but we're still waiting. Hopefully we can play the show, but if not we'll have to reschedule."

Arguello says playing in their hometown Spokane is something the band was looking forward to.

"Hometown shows are always fun, more people come out so it's awesome," Arguello said. "But, we can't do it now."

The band says they have already received calls from people who have tickets to the show next Tuesday. However, for now they do not have an official answer.

"Just try to make up the show as soon as possible, you know kind of coordinate with the knitting factory, see when they're going to open back up and when we can actually honor the tickets that people have purchased already online," Arguello said.

However, it is not just the bands that will be affected by the closing. Local restaurants say this could hurt them as well.

It definitely brings a lot of people to the area," said Scratch Employee Steve Kessler. "We get a lot of exposure from the Fox Theater, the Bing, and The Knitting Factory as well, maybe a little bit more next door in our lounge than the restaurant, but you know the amount of people that come down to a show it's definitely a lot of exposure to the area for local business."

Another man we spoke with who lives nearby the Knitting Factory, says he does not think shutting it down is the right solution.

"To close down the Knitting Factory for something that's not their fault is ridiculous," Adrian Lerma said. "So, no, I think they should appeal and they shouldn't close down at all."

KHQ reached out to the Knitting Factory for comment, they would only tell us they are working with Spokane Police to resolve the issue.

In a statement, Greg Marchant the Knitting Factory COO said,  "We made a lot of progress today, and while we believe that these talks will lead to a solution that will prevent the cancelations of any events, we do intend to cancel this coming Friday's event as a "cooling off" gesture." We feel confident in our security policies at Knitting Factory and wish to continue the dialogue with the community in the hopes of increasing the peace."

In the meantime, businesses downtown and the bands schedule to play shows will have to wait to see what happens.

"I still haven't heard a word officially if it's canceled or not, but I think it is," Arguello said.
