Kellogg’s Warns: There Might Be Glass In Your Breakfast Cereal

Posted: Updated:

YAHOO.COM - Kellogg's has issued a voluntary recall in the United States for three sizes of its Special K Red Berries cereal because the packages may contain fragments of glass, according to an alert posted by the company. The recall covers certain specified 11.2-oz., 22.4-oz., and 37-oz. boxes.

That pales in comparison to a massive recall issued by Kellogg's in 2010, where some 28 million boxes of cereal were impacted, including a variety of popular brands, such as Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Froot Loops and Honey Smacks. The huge recall was sparked when 20 people complained of a strong, unusual odor coming from their cereal boxes, which Kellogg's eventually traced to higher-than-normal levels of chemicals used in the wax and film for food packaging.

Kellogg's has not said how many boxes may be affected by the current recall. In October 2012, the company issued a similar recall for certain varieties of its Mini-Wheats cereal (the culprit there was "fragments of flexible metal mesh from a faulty manufacturing part"). That recall pulled an estimated 282,000 boxes off store shelves and cost the company between $20 million and $30 million.

The company is encouraging consumers who may have bought the cereal to check the UPC code on the packaging and the "Better if Used Before" date. Boxes of cereal impacted by the recall were sold across the county.

Here's how to identify whether any Kellogg's Special K Red Berries cereal you might have on hand is part of the recall.

For 11.2-oz. packages, look for UPC code 38000 59923. Also look for boxes marked "Better if Used Before: DEC 02 2013 KNC 105 00:13" through "DEC 02 2013 KNC 105 02:30."

For 22.4-oz. packages, look for UPC code 38000 78356. Also look for boxes marked "Better if Used Before: NOV 30 2013 KNA 105 07:00" through "NOV 30 2013 KNA 105 08:51," or "NOV 30 2013 KNB 105 15:00" through "NOV 30 2013 KNB 105 17:05."

For 37-oz. packages, look for UPC code 38000 20940. Also look for boxes marked "Better if Used Before: NOV 30 2013 KNB 107 17:31" through "NOV 30 2013 KNB 107 20:05."

If you find you have any boxes of cereal covered by the recall, Kellogg's says that you should not eat the food (because: glass) and instead contact the company for a replacement coupon, either via the company's website or by calling 800-962-1413 (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. ET).
