Morning Drive: What a Night for BYU, Hoosiers Rule, Congrats to Lake City

No. 1 Indiana held on to beat No. 4 Michigan State 72-68 (AP) No. 1 Indiana held on to beat No. 4 Michigan State 72-68 (AP)

I begin this morning with a great story from the WCC. No, not from the No. 3 Gonzaga Bulldogs, but from the lowly BYU Cougars. You gotta see this (video embedded above; mobile users can find out more here)! BYU beat in-state rival Utah State Tuesday night thanks to a last-second putback by Craig Cusick. What makes the story even more jawdropping has nothing to do with basketball. Cusick hit the game-winner just hours after learning his father has cancer.

"The great thing is that there's nowhere else he would rather have me be than on the basketball court playing," he told KSL TV after the game. "He's great man and I love him so much, and I'm just happy to be on this team and have this dream come true for me--especially on this night."

Cusick said he doesn't remember having a better night in his basketball career.

The Mariners said Tuesday morning they traded Mike Carp to the Boston Red Sox. Carp, 26, was designated for assignment on Feb. 12 to make room for starting pitcher Joe Saunders. The Mariners will get a player to be named later, or cash. I'm not sure what to think about this trade. I do, however, have faith the Ms will have a better offense this year, which hopefully will lead to a few more wins. I guy can hope, right?

In high school hoops…. Congratulations to the boys from Lake City. The Timberwolves punched their ticket to the Idaho state tournament last night by beating rival Coeur d'Alene 58-33. Ouch. That wasn't even close. The first state game is Feb. 28 in Nampa. Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls play each other Thursday for the final state berth.

Back to college ball…. Did you see the Indiana-Michigan State game!? Wow. Victor Oladipo had a sprained ankle and still managed to score 19 points, including a go-ahead putback, to beat the Spartans 72-68. Indiana had lost 17 straight road games to the Hoosiers dating back to 1991. The crazy thing is…. Michigan State could have tied the game in the closing seconds when Gary Harris was fouled on a three-point attempt. He missed one of the three free throws, and Indiana won the game.

And KHQ reporter Alex Rozier should be happy. Missouri pulled off a huge upset last night, beating No. 5 Florida 63-60.

That's all for today. Enjoy sport, my friends!
