YAKIMA, Wash.-- Some tense moments in a Yakima neighborhood Thursday after the bomb squad was called in for a suspicious object.
It was like a scene from a Hollywood war movie playing out on the streets of Yakima.
Police got a report of a suspicious object near a home on H and 3rd Streets just before 11am.
Police called in an Explosives Ordnance Disposal unit from the Yakima Training Center to help investigate the device. They say they evacuated about 30 people from their homes while the EOD unit used a robot and bomb suit to inspect it.
Unable to make a determination, the bomb squad blew the device up and when they looked inside, they didn't find explosives, instead it was full of marijuana.
"Very unusual. Never seen anything like that before. This is about my fifth pipe bomb in about five years, so, you never know what's inside until you blow it open, until you check it out," YPD Sgt. Mike Henne said.
Henne says the pipe was filled with about a half a pound of marijuana and he's not really sure why it was packaged like that or where it came from.
H St. between 2nd and 3rd Streets was closed for more than an hour today while the explosives unit investigated.
Luckily, it ended up being a somewhat odd situation rather than a dangerous one.
