HAUSER LAKE, Idaho—Idaho Fish and game decided to cancel a scheduled ice fishing event at Hauser Lake because they determined the ice is too thin and unsafe to hold the hundreds of people expected to attend. The decision caps off what they consider a disappointing ice fishing season overall.

On Thursday, Matt Abram took in some late season ice fishing on Hauser Lake. He carefully walked his gear onto the lake before drilling several holes. Hauser Lake's icy conditions were favorably safe today, but Idaho Fish and Game says overall this year that really hasn't been the case on many of their lakes including Hauser Lake.

"In most years we generally have ice fishing through February," said Phil Cooper, Idaho Fish and Game. "But it was very short this year."

Phil Cooper with Idaho Fish and Game says this season they really only had about three weeks of good ice fishing conditions. Leaving many of their anglers disappointed.

"They like to think they're going to fish all December January and February, yet this season we didn't have a long season where fishing was good," said Cooper.

Idaho Fish and Game says there are still a few lakes with plenty of solid and safe ice in Boundary County and areas on the Twin Lakes. But they recommend the lakes closer to Coeur d'Alene should only be attempted with extreme caution.
