Morning Drive: Wow, Whitworth! Buzzer Beater in CdA; GU a No. 1

Happy Friday, friends. You made it another week. Here are some of the more interesting sports stories – to me at least.

I will begin with Gonzaga. After all, they ARE one of the best college basketball teams in the country. Or at least that's what ESPN's Joe Lunardi says. Lunardi updated his bracketology bracket today and crowned the Zags a No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament, along with Miami, Indiana and Duke. That's some mighty fine company right there. As Joe puts it, the Zags could play Mercer (who?) in Salt Lake City, and then face the winner between Missouri (a dangerous team) and Saint Louis. But let's wait to see what really happens before we get all excited, shall we?

Speaking of tournaments, how about Whitworth? Both the men's and women's team are headed to the Northwest Conference championship. The men beat Lewis & Clark last night 74-69, and the women beat No. 25 Whitman 55-54. Both title games are slated for Saturday.

Now… let's talk about high school hoops. How about Post Falls, eh? The Trojans earned the final spot in the 5A tournament Thursday night, beating Coeur d'Alene 41-40. But perhaps HOW they won is more impressive than winning itself. Nick Hall made a sweet crossover move with seconds remaining then stepped back and hit a 3-pointer to lift his team to the win over CdA. Post Falls will play Grangeville in the first round on Saturday.

Finally, have you seen the amazing halfcourt shot making the rounds on sports shows and websites everywhere (see video above or watch it here: http://youtu.be/MBsHhnR6elE)? A cheerleader from William Carey University in Mississippi is world famous! With the ball placed on the floor at halfcourt, Ashlee Arnau did a front flip, and then picked up the ball on her way up, heaving it at the basket. Swish! "Nothin' but the bottom of the net!" (remember that diddy on SNL?). She told an AP reporter that she's been trying the shot all season long, but this was the first time she made it. Impressive, surely.
