Attorney General Holder Says Marijuana Review Nearing Conclusion
WASHINGTON - Attorney General Eric Holder says he is in the last stages of reviewing new state laws legalizing recreational use of marijuana in Washington and Colorado.
In a meeting on Tuesday Holder said he is examining policy options and international implications of the issue. He says he is still in the process of reviewing the initiatives. Marijuana is still illegal under federal law.
Holder's assessment could end in the federal government suing the states over the new laws. However, Holder could also decide not to mount a court challenge.
The Justice Department examination has been going on since shortly after last fall's elections. Washington and Colorado became the first states to pass laws legalizing the recreational use of marijuana.
