Colton completes the drive for five, wins championship

Colton won its fifth consecutive state title. Colton won its fifth consecutive state title.

Go ahead, don't be shy about it. Call it a dynasty. That's exactly what it is.

Colton won its fifth consecutive girls 1B state championship on Saturday at Spokane Arena with a 55-40 win over Sunnyside Christian.

"It's awesome, it's the best feeling awesome," junior guard Jenna Moser said. "Honestly, there's no way to describe how much it means when all your hard work pays off."

In true championship form, Colton turned a one-point game into a rout, closing the game on an 18-4 run. Moser and Paige Vincent combined for 17 of the final 18 points.

"We know we may not see it early in the game, but hopefully third quarter, we might see them start to wear down a little bit," said Colton head coach Clark Vinning of the game plan. "I mean, they only really play six girls. Over the course of three days, that can start to add up."

Moser finished with a game-high 20 points, added seven rebounds and came up with four steals. Vincent added 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including three 3-pointers.

"Both stepped up, I thought, on both ends of the floor," Vinning said. "Both of those guys did a great job, especially defensively."

Down 24-21 at the half, Colton stormed out of the locker room with a 11-2 run. Sunnyside Christian didn't get on the board in the second half until the 3:41 mark in the third quarter. By that time, Colton held a 32-26 lead and had the momentum.

Sunnyside Christian jumped out to a quick start, scoring 10 unanswered points out of the gate. Colton finally got on the board with a pair of free throws with 3:46 left in the first quarter. It took until the 1:48 mark in the first for the Wildcats first field goal, which came in the form of a Paige Vincent 3-pointer.

Katelyn Banks led Sunnyside Christian with 13 points, while Rita Dalrymple added eight. The Knights shot just 38.5 percent from the field and turned the ball over 24 times.

Colton didn't shoot the ball any better (35.2 percent), but was able to turn the multitude of Sunnyside Christian mistakes into 20 points off turnovers. And when it mattered, Moser and Vincent hit big shot after big shot to deliver the biggest win of the season for Colton.

Now, about that dynasty.

"You can call it whatever you want," Moser said with a laugh.

"It. Is. Fantastic," she added a split-second later, emphasizing each word.
