Despite weather, Eastern Washington players put up good numbers at pro day

Eastern Washington's pro day held surprise after surprise.

Former Washington State wide receiver Marquess Wilson and quarterback Jeff Tuel were planning on participating with the Eagles' players, but NFL rules forbid larger-school athletes to partake in pro day at smaller schools.

Another twist came as the athletes wrapped up the 40-yard dash at Roos Field, when hail started to come down in droves. Lightning and thunder soon accompanied the downpour. After more agility drills were completed in the weight room, the athletes moved to an indoor facility to complete routes and throwing drills. Before they could begin, though, the lights went out.

Eventually, the players returned to Roos Field so quarterback Kyle Padron could complete a few throws on the hail-covered field turf to stationary receivers. With the potential for injury on a slick surface, receivers Brandon Kaufman, Greg Herd and Nicholas Edwards did not run full speed.

In order to still have a chance to impress scouts -- there were representatives from 18 teams at Eastern on Wednesday -- the receivers are expected to join Washington State players for their pro day Wednesday at 10 a.m. Padron is planning on participating in Southern Methodist's pro day on March 27. The quarterback started his collegiate career with SMU before transferring to Eastern Washington.

Despite the technical hiccups, the players put up some impressive numbers. Kaufman improved upon the 40-yard dash time he clocked at the NFL combine. The 6-foot-5 receiver was clocked at 4.57 on Wednesday, faster than the 4.67 he ran in Indianapolis. (Watch highlights of Kaufman's run here)

Edwards was impressive in the vertical jump, with a mark of 40 inches. In comparison, the highest jump by a receiver at the combine this year was 39.5 inches.

"I think this was a really good pro day, I think everyone did well," Kaufman said. "I was doing good things on the field that they admired, I think. They were waiting for something like a 4.50, [40-yard dash]. I

Even though the receivers will not be able to run routs with Padron delivering the ball, there is familiarity with Tuel, who has been working out with them.

"I've worked with him in down in Florida and then a couple days ago ran up there [to Washington State]," said Kaufman of Tuel.

Defensive lineman Jerry Ceja and offensive lineman Will Post also participated on Wednesday. Linebacker Zach Johnson was measured for height and weight, but did not partake in any drills due to offseason shoulder surgery.
