HARRINGTON, Wash. - An EA-6B plane from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island with three people aboard crashed into a wheat field roughly 10 miles west of Harrington just before 9 a.m. Monday.

All three people aboard the plane are believed to be dead. People living and working near the small rural town tell KHQ they saw a large black plume of smoke. One witness described it as a black mushroom cloud, seen as far away as Davenport, roughly 23 miles from the scene.

The owner of the wheat field where the plane crashed told KHQ he was driving toward town when he saw the smoke. He went to the crash site, and saw debris and smoke, but no flames or signs of parachute ejection.

The first responders from the Harrington Fire Department remained on scene as of 11:30 a.m. when an ambulance from Harrington was seen leaving the scene near Coffee Pot Road & Duck Lake Lamona Road.

Whidbey Island is home to the U.S. Navy's tactical electronic warfare squadrons. Crews from the base that's located on Puget Sound regularly fly across Eastern Washington for training exercises.
