Crime Tracker Kalae Chock Introduces Safety Film For Windows

Posted: Updated:

KALAE CHOCK: Windows are an easy access point for thieves trying to break into homes.  The Spokane County Sheriff's Office says safety film is a good way to make your windows stronger and help keep criminals out.

The film won't keep your window from breaking but it will make it more difficult for thieves to get in.  Instead of a window breaking under just one blast of pressure, the film will require a person hit the window several times before it breaks.

The idea is that the film will buy time, either alerting neighbors to the sounds of the consecutive blasts or deterring thieves from continuing to try and break through the strong glass. The Sheriff's Office backs a product known as 3M Safety Film.

Quality Auto Trim Owner Mike Dalton installs it.  3M is the same company that makes scotch tape and post-it notes. It's known for it's adhesive.

Dalton says the thicker the film, the more effective it is.  However, he also says thicker film leaves a window less clear.  Dalton reminds customers that though the film strengthens glass and binds it together, it is not impossible to break a window with the film.
