Mariners Split-Squad Falls to Netherlands

PEORIA, Ariz. – The Seattle Mariners split squad dropped an exhibition game versus the Kingdom of the Netherlands World Baseball Classic (WBC) team 8-1 Friday night at the Peoria Sports Complex. The Netherlands has qualified for the championship round of the WBC in San Francisco this weekend.

The result and all statistics from tonight's exhibition do not count in Cactus League standings. 

The Netherlands scored three runs in the first when former Mariner Wladimir Balentien hit a 3-run homer off Seattle starter Jon Garland. Garland allowed another two runs in the second inning on a two-RBI single from Balentien as Seattle fell behind 5-1. In three innings of work, Garland was charged with five earned runs on six hits, while striking out seven.

Lucas Luetge (2.0 IP) and Stephen Pryor (1.0 IP) worked shutout innings. Logan Bawcom (2.0 IP) allowed one earned run and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0 IP) was touched for a pair of runs in the ninth.

Seattle totaled just four hits, including two by Dustin Ackley.

Seattle returns to Cactus League play tomorrow with a road game vs. the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale (Radio – 710 ESPN Seattle). Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (1-0, 0.00) is scheduled to make his fourth appearance and second spring start vs. Rockies right-hander Chris Volstad (0-0, 1.29).
