PARKLAND, Wash. – Tyler Pfeffer went 4-4 with four runs batted in to lead visiting Whitworth to a 9-8 victory at Pacific Lutheran on Sunday afternoon as the Pirates salvaged the third game of the series and avoided a sweep at the hands of the Lutes.

Whitworth improved to 9-8-1 overall and 4-2 in the Northwest Conference while PLU dropped to 13-6, 6-3.

The Pirates jumped out to a 5-0 lead but then had to hold off several determined Lute rallies.

Pfeffer and Nick Motsinger had RBI singles in each of the first two innings to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead.  Then Whitworth added three more in the third on Danny Jordan's bases-loaded triple down the left field line with two outs.

Meanwhile Nick Scourey watch shutting the Lutes out through the first four innings, working out of trouble in the second and fourth frames.  But PLU broke through in the fifth with four runs on only two hits.  After Curtis Wildung drove in a run, the next two scored on a walk and hit batter after the bases were loaded.  The final run scored on a ground out.

Whitworth went back up 8-4 with three in the top of the sixth.  Pfeffer had a two-run single and Josh Davis added a run-scoring hit.

Alex Beal's RBI double highlighted a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, pulling PLU within 8-6.

Pfeffer's final run-scoring single of the game drove in what proved to be the winning run in the top of the eighth.

Taylor Isadore had already thrown three innings of relief when he came out to start the ninth.  But after a leadoff walk, he gave way to Michael Woodkey.  Woodkey got the first out, but also gave up an RBI double to Cory Nelson and a run-scoring single to Markus McClurkin.  Jason Renner then came in and got the final two outs with the tying run on base.

Scourey got the win after allowing four runs on five hits in five innings.  Renner was credited with his third save of the season.

In addition to Pfeffer's big play at the plate, Motsinger went 3-3 and scored two runs, while Jordan finished with two hits and three RBIs.

Whitworth will host Central Washington on Tuesday afternoon before playing host to NWC-leader Linfield this coming weekend at Merkel Field.
