Idaho House Kills Teen Tanning Bill

Posted: Updated:

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - House lawmakers have pulled the plug on legislation designed to restrict teens using tanning beds.

The 25-43 vote in the House Monday killed the bill aimed at preventing dangerous or deadly skin cancer.

The measure was a renewed effort to prohibit the use of ultraviolet tanning devices for minors under age 16.

A similar bill introduced last year included fines up to $1,000, but this year's bill reduced that citation to $100 for first offenses.

Lewiston Democrat Rep. John Rusche said youth who tan regularly face heightened risks of cancer. He argued the restrictions parallel similar teen limitations on driving, smoking and drinking.

But Nampa Republican Rep. John Vander Woude said the bill hurts small business and argued parents - not government - should have control over their children's decisions.
