Group Buys House Across The Street From Westboro Baptist Church And Paints A Colorful Protest

TOPEKA, Kansas - An organization promoting peace is protesting the Westboro Baptist Church in a "colorful" way.  The church known for protesting military and gay funerals with provocative signs has new neighbors and the house is hard to miss.

The house is called the "Planting Peace Equality House."  Planting Peace is an organization that aims to spread equality and peace throughout the world.

Members of the group bought the home to live in temporarily and are painting it rainbow - the colors of the gay pride flag - symbolizing equality, peace and positive change.

Organizers say the goal is to take a stance against a group they say is hateful.

"The importance is to speak out, if it's in support of someone who's different, it's about embracing diversity, and just if someone's being bullied or something, do something, don't just stand by and so this is our way of doing something," Planting Peace Director Of Operations Davis Hammet said.

Members plan to use the house as a place for guest speakers to stay - as they're also starting an anti-bullying campaign.

It will be painted the way it is for as long as they own it and they have no plans to sell it.

A spokesperson for the Westboro Baptist Church says this doesn't change anything they do or say and only shines a brighter spotlight on their message.
