Dpt. of Defense Forced to Halt College Tuition Assistance for Military Members

Posted: Updated:

NBCRightNow.com - Budget pressures from sequestration have forced the Department of Defense to halt college tuition assistance for all military members.

The federal assistance program provided veterans $4,500 a year that went straight to tuition and fees left over from the post 911 GI Bill.

WSU Tri-Cities is already starting to see the effects. Ken Curtis helps veterans with their education benefits at the Tri-Cities campus. He says one veteran had to back out of summer classes this week because he didn't have enough money to attend without the federal tuition assistance.

"So that would be a case where that really...there is a lot of people that aren't eligible for other education benefits and that's a go or no go for some people pretty much," said Ken Curtis with the WSU Tri-Cities Veterans Affair's Office.

Veterans enrolled in the federal tuition assistance program prior to March 5th will not be affected by the suspension.
