A Tradition Carried On From Salt Lake City to Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — With Gonzaga playing in Salt Lake City we found another interesting connection to the city here in Spokane.

In 2002, John Stockton built The Warehouse Athletic Facility right across the street from Gonzaga. And if the basketball court looks familiar, there's a reason.

It's only fitting in a place built by John Stockton, you would find his daughter continuing the family tradition, on the same floor her father once played.

"I don't really think about it a whole lot when I'm playing on it, but yeah it's neat," said Laura Stockton, John's daughter.

Laura is practicing with her elite AAU basketball team, the Sandpipers. For more than a decade, The Warehouse has been a big reason for the growth of Spokane's youth basketball. Giving teams like the Sandpipers a place to practice and play year round.

"This has sort of opened up a whole lot more options for all the kids of the city," said Kerry Pickett, facility director.

The Warehouse has five basketball courts used by leagues from the YMCA to Spokane AAU. It even accommodates other indoor sports and their activities. This facility has opened up a number of opportunities for all age groups to participate in sports.

"Without it they had hit a ceiling, and they weren't going any place," said Pickett.   But the unique feature of the facility is definitely the court.

The exact same floor played on by John Stockton and the Utah Jazz years ago. The team donated it to John to put inside the gym when he was building it.

"It's pretty cool, and it meant a lot to John. I think a lot of the kids that come in are taken a back by it for a moment to consider history," said Pickett.
