Cougars Cruise Past Brown, 20-1

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State used solid pitching and an 18-hit attack to whip Brown 20-1 in nonconference baseball, Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Scott Simon (2-0) gave up one run on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts in seven innings to earn the victory. Heath Mayo (0-2), the first of three Brown (1-9) pitchers, yielded six runs in 5 1/3 innings and took the loss. For Simon, the start was the longest of his career and the strikeouts tied his career high.

"It starts on the mound and once again we got a solid performance," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Offensively, we have had some pitches to hit in the series and our guys haven't missed them."

The Cougars (14-8) scored a run in the second on a fielder's choice and added a run in the fourth on the first home run of the season by P.J. Jones to lead 2-0.

Washington State broke the game open with a four-run fifth. Trace Tam Sing led off with a single and scored on a one-out single by Trek Stemp. Yale Rosen singled and Nick Tanielu was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Adam Nelubowich doubled to score all three runners and push the Cougars' advantage to 6-0.

Brown picked up its run in the sixth, the first time the Bears scored since the first inning of Friday's series opener. The Cougars tacked on six runs in the seventh and eight more in the eighth.

In the seventh, Nelubowich collected his career-high fourth RBI with a single and Bret Jacobs was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run. Tam Sing ripped his first-career triple to drive in three and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Monda to cap the rally.

In the eighth, J.J. Robinson drilled a two-run double and Monda crushed a grand slam to right field to give Washington State an 18-1 lead. Austin Pernell added a run-scoring single and Michael Monda was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for his first-career RBI.

The series concludes, Monday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
